THE SCHOOL

Balboa Academy is an international, coeducational, college preparatory school that offers a U.S. curriculum education for Pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grade. All courses are taught in English. The Academy was established in Panama City, Panama, in August 1999 and graduated its first senior class of 16 in June 2000.  A majority of the seniors enroll in four-year universities in the United States or Panama. Balboa Academy students represent a diversity of economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. A Board of Trustees composed of founding educators and Board of Directors composed of parents governs the non-profit school.

 

THE FACULTY

Balboa Academy, 2007-2008, has a faculty of 68 full time and 3 part time teachers, 6 education technicians, 3 administrators, 2 counselors, and 2 educational prescriptionists. Forty faculty members have Masters’ or degrees and one teacher has a doctorate degree. The pupil teacher ratio is approximately 11 to 1.

 

THE STUDENT BODY

The Balboa Academy’s enrollment for second school year 2007-2008 is 782 students.

The nationality of the student body is approximately 40% U.S., 30% Panamanian, and 30% international from 38 countries.

The High School has 189 students enrolled, 49 Seniors, 51 Juniors,  42 Sophomores and 50  Freshmen.

The Middle School has 214 students enrolled in Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.

The Elementary School  has 298 students enrolled in Grades K thru 4.

The Pre-Kindergarten has 78 students enrolled in the 3 yr and 4 yr old programs.

 

ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIPS

Balboa Academy is fully accredited by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Panama, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in the United States.  Balboa Academy is also a member of professional organizations, which relate to the secondary level. These include:

American School Counselors Association

The National Honor Society

The College Entrance Examination Board

The Association of American Schools in Central America

 

DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS

To graduate from Balboa Academy, a student must complete  25 credits; 4 credits each of English, Science, and a Foreign Language;
3 credits each of Mathematics, and History, 1 ½ credits in Health & Personal Fitness, 1 credit each of Fine Arts, and Computer Technology,  and 3½  credits of electives. All high school students are expected to participate in a community service project.
