Balboa Academy

4 Year High School Plan

Each year the counselor meets individually with 8th through 11th grade students to establish and revise their Four-Year Plan. This plan lists the courses that the students will take during their 4 years of high school. Many courses have prerequisites; therefore, advanced planning is essential. Registration for high school classes takes place in May-June for the next school year.

At this time students receive instruction on the scheduling process and each student views the Balboa Academy High School Program Planning Guide. This Program Planning Guide describes all the courses offered by the school. Using the Four-Year Plan along with the Program Planning Guide, the students work with their counselor to select classes that meet the Balboa Academy graduation requirements; Panamanian requirements, (if a Panamanian Diploma is desired), and preparatory requirements for the type of college or university degree desired by the student. It's critical that students plan ahead and give serious consideration to their choices of college and major, since certain high school courses may be necessary for entrance into a professional degree program.

Professions such as medicine and engineering require that students have a thorough background in mathematics and science. Some colleges and universities programs have specific entrance requirements. Failure to meet these requirements in high school may require taking the courses in college and delay their college graduation. If in doubt, students should consult with their counselor to receive advice on course selection. They may also need to directly contact the college or university they are planning to attend. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves and to take the highest-level courses available.
