previous knowledge of the Spanish language.
Spanish 1 is designed to provide the beginning learner of Spanish with the basic knowledge necessary to communicate effectively. The program offers students the opportunity to build the vocabulary needed for everyday oral communication while beginning to develop Spanish writing skills. The student learns the necessary tools needed to develop oral and written skills in Spanish. It offers students the opportunity to improve oral skills as well as to identify grammatical elements within a sentence. This course also introduces students to a variety of reading and writing activities.

Spanish 2 is designed to provide the Spanish language student with the opportunity to apply previous knowledge of language comprehension, both in oral and written activities. The course focuses on language acquisition and development by increasing the student's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, writing and oral communications skills.

Spanish 3 is designed to continue the development of the Spanish language student with the opportunity to apply previous knowledge of language comprehension, both in oral and written activities. The course focuses in further development of language acquisition by strengthening the student’s grammar, vocabulary, writing and oral communication skills.

recommended for students with 3 years of prior Spanish language study.
Spanish 4 will provide students with the opportunity to communicate correctly and effectively in a range of situations and contexts, as well as to encourage the comprehension of the language and culture of Hispanic countries, Spanish 4 will develop the student's skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing through the study of a wide range of literary and non-literary texts, tapes, movies and programs. A primary goal of this course is to develop the student ability to able to comprehend and clearly express ideas in Spanish. Social, cultural and academic objectives are presented in a balanced manner. There is both a written and oral assessment. The instructor evaluates an examination at the end of the course. The oral assessment is based on class activities.

in the Spanish language.
Spanish 9 is designed to help students apply prior reading and literary analysis skills. Emphasis is on the teaching of grammatical and vocabulary structures while exploring a variety of literary works. The specific content of the literature studied will be used as a springboard in the development of learning, thinking, language and life skills.

Spanish 10 is designed to study the origin and evolution of Latin American and Panamanian literature through its most important authors and literary works. The specific contents of the works studied will be used to foster the development of grammatical, vocabulary and spelling skills and as a springboard to the development of learning, thinking, and life skills. Both Latin-American and Panamanian literature will be studied.

Major Obligations of Coursework: Cronica de una muerte anunciada, Mariana Pineda, and/or Historias de la Artamila, during the summer for first grade in the fall; oral and written reports on Hispanic literature and AP authors; a term paper at the end of the year
Course Description: The Spanish Literature AP course is intended to be the equivalent of a third year college course, “Introduction to Hispanic Literature”. Spanish and Spanish-American literature is presented, discussed, and analyzed. Students will be prepared to take the AP Spanish Literature Examination of the College Board.

FRENCH
Studies in French and Spanish are offered. The modern languages are all taught in the target language and incorporate frequent oral drills and quizzes to enhance speaking skills, as well as guided compositions to develop writing proficiency. All High School students must have a minimum of four years of High School language credit. As much study as possible in one foreign language is highly encouraged - most competitive colleges look for five levels in the same language. It is a school policy that to pass on to the next level of the language, one must have a C or higher for the final grade in the current level

French 1 (FFL)

Prerequisite (s): None. This course is recommended for students with no
previous knowledge of or experience in the French language. Many of the students
will be studying French as a third or even fourth language. Classes are usually
very small.
Course Description: French is spoken in the classroom as much as possible in order to strengthen students’ aural comprehension and to promote oral proficiency. A variety of activities encourage students to use simple conversation in everyday situations, and students are expected to master the application of the models of correct colloquial speech. Paired and group activities facilitate the development of communicative skills, in eluding sentence-building and the writing of dialogues and paragraphs. Audio tapes, visual aids, videos and a workbook supplement the text. French 1 is designed to provide the beginning learner of French with the basic knowledge necessary to communicate effectively. The program offers students the opportunity to build the vocabulary needed for communication.

FRENCH STUDENT CONTRACT
I. Admission Criteria
A student will be considered for admission into the French class with a record of cooperation, timeliness in assignments and a willingness to participate in all aspects of class-and coursework
b. The recommendation of the course instructor
II. Conditions
It is understood that a student will be recommended for course French language course if he/she has demonstrated exceptional interest in the subject, a willingness to learn and eagerness to participate in class, an ability to understand concepts at the first presentation, the maturity and self-discipline to accomplish assignments by deadlines imposed, and the necessary grades indicated. A pattern of refusal to adhere to homework deadlines, absences in excess of 10 class meetings, or tardies in excess of 2 per month will result in a denial of entrance into or reexamination of permission to remain in the class. In addition, should a student’s semester grade drop below 70, the student will not be allowed to remain in the class. Differences in the grading scale used for each group of students will be established solely at the discretion of the instructor.
III. Acceptance of Conditions
I have read and understood the criteria for admission to and the conditions for remaining in the French IV Honors or the French AP Language class.
